Next Project!

Wed Apr 9, 2008, 12:01 AM
I've been drawing GI Joe now for about a year and a half and it's just about done for me! It's been my only professional art job so far.

Now I'm slated to work on the latest series of Voltron. I just started reading the series to get more knowledge of what I'll be dealing with and I'm pretty darn excited for it.

After hundreds of pages of drawing butt-chinned men with guns shooting at each other, getting to draw giant robots in space and monsters w/ a slight anime flare is a welcome delight. AND since I love variety, it's great to know that it's only 5 issues. Sooooo with that in mind, I really get the chance to try some new things and see how it works for a few issues.

Jean-Francois Beaulieu will be joining me as well. I'm really excited to see what happens.

Also, if anyone is interested in buying GI Joe art, check this out... it's not totally up to date, but if you want to buy any pages not listed, just contact me.

And I'm also available for commissions. Not sure what my rates are... but they're reasonable.

  • Listening to: Joanna Newsom and Radiohead
  • Reading: Voltron Omnibus and Bios
  • Watching: Hidden Fortress
  • Eating: Soup and Salad
  • Drinking: Water

Congrats on your continued success. I'm excited to see what you do with Voltron! (What's next? Thundercats? Jem and the Holograms?)

Getting to see so many of your pages one after the other like on that site really shows how great your figures are. I loaded them all to admire them. Very good stuff.

Also, I am really interested in knowing more about your commissions.

ha, dude.... even though this is public, i don't care.... i'm so over 80's properties. but, at least this one is sci-fi.

thanks for the compliments! my figures need work. thankfully, i think they're improving with time and repetition. somehow...

as for commissions, i really just want an excuse to draw some cool shite. anything really. the crazier, the better.
If Beaulieu "accidentally" messes up and colors the pilots' suits the same color as their lions, I will not mind. I could never seriously watch Voltron when I was a kid because the pilot of the blue lion wore pink, while the pilot of the red lion wears blue? I think I could get behind it if none of their suits matched, but the green guy piloted the green lion, while they just made up colors for the other two. So random.

Anyway, do you have any ideas about what you're going to go make your art more anime/manga? It sounds like an interesting challenge.

On the commission front, I'll think of something crazy and get back to you. What kind of crazy are you looking for? Poses, situations, events, etc?
Now thats a sweet gig! I have been inking nothing but people in suit coats for months and I am due for a change as well.
Sounds like a fun gig. Grats on the long GI Joe run. I'm lucky enough that my gigs are always minis and one shots. I don't think I could do a long term gig without getting burnt out.
Congrats dude, I been really enjoying your GI JOE run, when your at your best your awesome, I truly hope to see you on GI JOE again someday

thanks, yeah.... there were some really trying times there as far as quality of work. having to pump out a page, no matter how u feel, every day was and can be incredibly difficult. for me, at this point it all hinges on a few things, difficulty of the page (how many characters, guns, backgrounds, etc.) and how excited I am for the material. A year and a half is a pretty hard way to start out your first gig... but it really was like a bootcamp and will have me ready for some difficult drawing duties in the future.

i'm sure some day i'll be happy to go back to my GI Joe days, but I think only after a nice LONG break.

Thanks again!
wow looking forward to seeing giant robots from you! i still have fond memories of my complete Voltron set that stood like, 2 feet tall. which my mom threw away. jerk. anyway congrats! will probably be down for Wizard World again this year, excited that it's in June instead of August. hope to see you there and maybe we can grab some real food this time.

Looks like patience paid off! That's great news. I know you were really getting worn out. Drawing giant robots is gonna be rough. If you can do it like the IDW Transformers...that would be amazing ha ha. Good luck!

Do you know how soon you'll be starting on that?
